DIY Cardboard Wreath

Before having kids, I really only decorated for Christmas, my favorite time of year! Now that I'm a mom of 2 under 2, I want to embrace every holiday and make each one fun and memorable for my babies. It's become my goal to sprinkle a little bit of celebration into all the rooms in our home without spending loads of money on cheaply made items. Don't get me wrong, I love a good Hobby Lobby or Home Goods find, but the reality is, I'm also a working mom and have limited time to peruse the stores.

A play kitchen with a black faucet and a sink. A window decor with a DIY wreath and red bow hangs on a white tiled backsplash. Greenery decorates the top.

I wanted to add a little something to the kid's play kitchen space in our living room. I started rummaging through my craft supplies and found an embroidery hoop. I am a hoarder of toilet paper/paper towel rolls so I grabbed a few and got to work. I love how this came out! It is so simple and classic, can be dressed up or down. I kept it simple with a red bow for the 4th but you could add a flag, more ribbon, pom poms, etc. I plan to reuse this for Christmas and swop out the ribbon depending on the other holidays.

If you don't have an embroidery hoop, you could use any wire circular frame or even cut a piece of cardboard to use as your frame. Follow along with the steps below and let me know how yours comes out!

SUPPLIES

- Circular frame (embroidery hoop, wire frame, cardboard)

- Toilet paper/paper towel rolls

- Glue gun

- Ribbon or other accessories

STEPS

  1. Cut toilet paper/paper towel rolls into 1/4 to 1/2 inch segments. I got 6 pieces per toilet paper roll.

  2. Flatten each piece and fold in half. It will almost resemble a heart shape, or a V.

  3. Use a hot glue gun to secure each piece onto the circular frame. I just eyeballed the distance between each piece. Doesn't need to be perfect! You will likely need to hold it in place for a few seconds to harden or it will start to sag.

  4. Add your accessories and hang to display.
